"Places, the product, is not going away. The term “Places” will be phased out eventually and they will likely (very much TBD) be referred to as “Pages with location.” This Thursday, August 25th, the new Facebook iPhone app will still have the Places icon. People will be able to check into a Place through the Places icon (just like before) or by clicking on the “check in” button at the top of the News Feed. From there, they will be directed to the status update composer so that they can share where they are, who they’re with (optional) and what they’re doing (optional). It’s important to note that the Place pages (with location) you have have worked hard to establish and manage will remain intact."
